Hack:
Turning PUSH into PULL – one step closer to becoming a more commercially aware HR Service
Traditionally HR has pushed their service to the business rather than thinking like an entrepreneur and promoting their strengths to invite more of a pull into the business on the request of self-directed and self-reflective managers.
Many HR departments are being drawn into organizational restructures which mean they are in high demand to support these internal activities. This may result in HR's main focus being 'the present', rather than their own future survival in an ever-changing commercial world. HR is not necessarily immune to being outsourced. If HR departments are to survive the new world, it is important to empower managers to be more self-directed, understand the workings of 'the living organisation' and improve the promotion of the strengths HR brings to any business.
- Collate projected workforce demographics data and use it to raise curiosity.
- Show how it - in collaboration with other Corporate Services - can support the organisation to be more adaptable
- Promote the strengths HR brings to any business
- Present the information in an Infographic or animation e.g. The Workforce is Changing Rapidly (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2XIQkDldpmI)
A fun but informative, future-focussed infographic about how the workforce demographics in your County or Region is changing will raise curiosity and awareness about the challenges the future workforce may represent. It gives managers the data and information to make better informed decisions and where required seek out HR Services expertise that can support them in overcoming some of the challenges.
In order to collate the right data, HR will have to think beyond their own area and collaborate with IT, Property Services, Communication, Design etc to pull the right information together. In a non-collaborative organizational culture this could be a challenge.
As such it is crucial for HR to sell the benefits to their colleagues in the other services who will equally benefit from this rise in curiosity and awareness in relation to the changing workforce.
- Reflect on what information you may wish to include in the infographic, such as generational differences, County or Regional Challenges and Skills Gaps, use of technology and social media etc.
- Collaborate with the service areas/departments who may have this information to hand and who will equally benefit from this type of awareness raising activity.
- Work with your Communications Team on pulling the information together in a fun and informative infographic.
