OUR APPROACH
DELL and the Management Innovation eXchange (MIX) are inviting IT and business leaders to identify practical ways in which technology can help bust bureaucracy. This initiative takes the form of a hackathon—an online problem-solving process that harnesses the collective intelligence of progressive technologists and management practitioners from around the world.
The hackathon is a hands-on, collaborative effort focused on finding, developing, and eventually implementing real-world solutions that can be experimented within in our companies—not someday, but today. It is based on the MIX’s groundbreaking methodology that will help participants:
DIAGNOSE THE REAL COSTS OF BUREAUCRACY
How do traditional, bureaucratic management practices create inefficiencies and wasted energy that make organizations much less adaptable, inspiring, and engages places to work?
DISTILL THE FEATURES OF POST-BUREAUCRATIC ORGANIZATIONS
What are the new management practices that will help capture the benefits of bureaucracy (focus, efficiency, and scale) without the costs (e.g., inertia, incrementalism, and disengagement)?
JOINTLY INVENT MANAGEMENT HACKS
What are the most radical yet practical ideas for how technology and IT can enable these new, post-bureaucratic management practices?
We’ll pursue these goals in five stages, tapping into the collective intelligence from hundreds of passionate participants from around the world:
Phase 1Why we must bust bureaucracy & IT's role |
Phase 2The features of the post-bureaucratic organization |
Phase 3Ideas for busting bureaucracy (Part 1) |
Phase 4Ideas for busting bureaucracy (Part 2) |
Phase 5Synthesis |
---|---|---|---|---|
Size up the costs of bureaucracy. Discuss the role of IT (how does IT contribute to bureaucracy? How can IT be a catalyst to bust it?) |
Define the attributes of the post-bureaucratic organization—what are the new management practices that can capture the benefits of bureaucracy without the costs? |
Brainstorm mini-hacks—an initial set of bold new ideas that, by leveraging technology and IT capabilities, would help enable post-bureaucratic management practices |
Develop the most promising ideas into management hacks—practical blueprints that can be prototyped rapidly and cheaply |
Synthesize the key insights from the hackathon Disseminate results and provide updates |
