Hacking HR to Build an Adaptability Advantage

Quick MIX Brainstorm: Defining Adaptability

Earlier in the hackathon Gary shared his definition of adaptability.  Now it's your turn--we'd like your quick input on the most important things that set a truly adaptable organization apart from the rest.  This "Quick MIX" brainstorm is open to all registered participants to the hackathon (register here).  The best contributions earn a chance to be recognized in the hackathon blog, CIPD's on-line site, and  in the social media channels of CIPD, the MIX.

Almost crisis-proof

Idea by Helen Snape on May 2, 2022
When that unexpected major event happens or a star performer is suddenly no longer there, it doesn't lead to a crisis because the organisation has developed its people to be flexible enough, skilled in change management, with succession planning through the core. I am now thinking of a hydra, but in a good way!

Comfortable with ambiguity, clear purpose, acts instead of reacting.

Idea by Paula Aamli on May 4, 2022
The adaptable organisation is ok with a certain chaos; knows there is a time for both caution and boldness, a time to question, a time to decide and a point where failure to take risks is itself risky. HR will sometimes be the ‘rain makers’, sometimes the guardians of legacy but at all times, commited to a culture of trust, collaboration and respect.

What we are talking about is National Culture of Talents which defines their motivation profile and behaviour on the workplace.

Adabtability is managing the means

Idea by Stefan Blobelt on May 3, 2022
And, adaptability is stopping the misled "color by numbers" (MbO) management practices and replacing them through work process and hence people oriented measures (Management by Means). No one can manage a system by using descriptive (reductionist numbers) instead of explanatory (understanding the means) models!

it anticipates the future and pro-actively adjusts business model to succeed.

Idea by John A. Bushfield on May 4, 2022
The future is all about change. An adaptable organization will be sensitive to the signals, interpret how it will impact the business, and modify it's business model to successfully meet the challenges presented by those changes.

Adaptability in organizations is all about learning when to let go and when to disrupt and innovate!

Idea by Feras Zeidan on May 3, 2022
For an organization to be adaptable, it needs to be proactively seeking change and developing its readiness for disruptions. Organizations need to know when to let go of concepts & Mammoths that weigh them down in order to make their turn arounds (if needed!) possible.  It is all about fostering disruptive thinking, Innovation, Motivation &Accountability!

Collaboration not competativeness

Idea by Heidi De Wolf on May 2, 2022
Adaptable organisations are organisations where employees are empowered to use their strengths for the benefit of the organisation, are coached in making better-informed decisions, where leaders are self-aware about their impact and where collaboration wins over competativeness.

Adaptability calls for openness as a leading culture

Idea by Stefan Blobelt on May 3, 2022
Adaptability requires the cultivation of a collective mindset and motivation to be open to new things, trends, developments, and disruptive thinking practices by honoring these personality traits in the same way like conventional performance criteria.

When the organisation is constantly learning both from within and outside

Idea by Rosana Butron on May 6, 2022
A truly adaptable organization learns from its mistakes, success and failed attempts. An adaptable organization is able to learn from itself but also the environment (Competitors, Government, Market trends, Local Economy, Global Economy, Shareholders).

Comfortable with ambiguity; clear purpose; acts instead of reacting.

Idea by Paula Aamli on May 4, 2022
The adapable organisation is ok with a certain chaos; knows there is time for both caution and boldness, a time to question, a time to decide - and a point where failure to take risks is itself risky. HR will sometimes be the 'rain makers', sometimes the guardians of legacy - but at all times, committed to a culture of trust, collaboration and respect.

An adaptable organization is free of silos. Aren’t silos things to store corn?

Idea by Edgar Huisman on May 7, 2022
Room to change, learn and be able to think out of your own competency box because there simply is no box or silo. The adaptable organization therefor discontinues maintenance of hierarchical or managerial structure and will visualize its ‘Social Power’ view with cross-relations like “who boosts me”, “a mentor to”, “a thought leader for” etc.

A learning organisation that has policies, systems and process to encourage, reward and implement new initiatives and ideas in a sustainable manner

Idea by Uduma Kalu Etea on May 2, 2022
You know your organisation is adaptable when it actively encourages and rewards learning and knowledge management i.e.the totality of policies, systems, processes and practices used by an organisation to encourage the exchange of ideas. It will still implement and encourage initiatives even after a previous new initiatives have failed.

Having distinct, disagreeable visions

Idea by Hiroyuki Baba on May 3, 2022
An organization is adaptable if all of those belonging to it trully subscribe to very clearly defined visions which should be somethng that can be objected by others (outside of the organization). Such visions must be both inspirational and endurable even if the enviroment surrounding the organization changes.

Besides its size or type, an adaptive organization is one trying to adapt to a volatile environment, characterized for rapid and unpredictable changes.

Idea by Rafa García on May 2, 2022
It's the one beeing aware that we are engaged in a profound change of paradigms making up what I call ENVIRONMENT 2.0. This concept is inspired by Management 2.0 (Gary Hamel), shamrock organization (Charles Handy), personal productivity (David Allen), personal branding (Tom Peteres, Andrés Pérez Ortega) and others.
